Dubrovnik Revisited

Here and there, flouting the uniformity
of crisp red tile, remains a roof, intact,
ancient among the new; the soft deformity
of centuries, faded witness to the fact
of Serbian and Montenegrin shelling
of restaurants, churches, shops in '91
and '92. The story stands retelling
while there are those who live to serve the gun -
the family men, American and French,
British, Russian, German and Chinese,
whose aftershave goes far to mask the stench
of cant, who sleep at night, who take their ease
in penthouse suites, contented to have made
another sale. An honourable trade.
